Since its beginning, Promoting Enduring Peace has sought ways to bring people together, to encourage dialog and promote mutual understanding. PEP's goal is to change the social paradigm from one of competition to one of cooperation, from a culture of violence and war to a world devoted to its peoples' mutual benefit and peace. By organizing groups of Americans to visit the USSR, Cuba, Costa Rica, China, and Mongolia during and after the Cold War, PEP has given ordinary citizens a chance to get to know "the Other," leaving them with positive, life-long memories, new friendships and hope for a peaceful world. In 2002, PEP traveled to Vietnam to try to help heal the scars of the U.S.-Vietnam war. After having met hundreds of children born with birth defects stemming from their parents' exposure to Agent Orange, PEP established the Vietnam Children's Fund to help pay for their medical care. In 2005, PEP underwent a revitalization process that is now leading us forward into our second half-century. As it strives to "walk in the footsteps" of Mahatma Gandhi, PEP annually honors others who have done so by awarding its prestigious Gandhi Peace Award, established in 1960. Recipients include Eleanor Roosevelt, Dorothy Day, Linus Pauling, A.J. Muste, U Thant, Cesar Chavez, Daniel Ellsberg, Father Roy Bourgeois, Congressman Dennis Kucinich, and others. Over the years, PEP has acted as a clearinghouse for materials relevant to peace issues, distributing over 10 million articles free of charge around the world. Today, recent articles and an archival list can be found on our Website here. PEP supports a stronger and more democratic United Nations. We are a U.N.- accredited nongovernmental organization (NGO), serving on the Disarmament Committee and most actively on the Working Group on Israel/Palestine. Other concerns include human rights abuses, unfair labor practices and environmental devastation associated with corporate globalization. PEP cooperates with many local, national and international groups in bringing these issues to public attention. We hope you will join us in the vital work for a sustainable future and a peaceful world. |
